Helping Your Child Feel Confident Going Back to School After the Summer Holidays
The end of summer holidays brings with it a familiar mix of emotions — excitement, nerves, and for some families, a touch of anxiety. As September edges closer, many children will be preparing for a new school year. Some might even be starting at a brand-new school, which can be both thrilling and daunting.
As parents, it’s completely normal to feel a little apprehensive too. You may be wondering:
- Will my child settle in okay?
- What if they feel left out or struggle to make friends?
- Will they cope with the new routine?
- What if they face unkind behaviour or bullying?
First of all, take a deep breath — you’re not alone. These worries are valid, and many families are going through the same thing. But there are plenty of ways you can gently prepare and preframe your child for a confident return to school.
- Start the School Routine Early
A week or two before term starts, begin easing back into your usual school routine — earlier bedtimes, structured mealtimes, and consistent morning routines. This helps reduce the “shock to the system” and brings a sense of calm predictability to the first day back.
- Talk It Through (And Really Listen)
Create moments where you can talk about school in a relaxed, pressure-free way — maybe while walking the dog, driving in the car, or during bedtime snuggles. Ask open-ended questions like:
- “What are you most looking forward to?”
- “Is there anything you’re a bit nervous about?”
Let your child know it’s okay to feel a bit wobbly. Remind them that feeling nervous is completely normal — even for adults starting something new!
- Focus on the Positives
Highlight the good things about going back: seeing friends, learning fun new topics, school clubs, or even the joy of fresh stationery! If they’re changing schools, you might explore photos of the new place together or take a drive past to build some familiarity.
- Practice Confidence Builders
Confidence isn’t something you either have or don’t — it’s a skill that can be practised. One simple trick is to go over real-life scenarios and role-play how your child might respond:
- How to say hello to someone new
- What to do if they feel left out
- How to ask for help from a teacher
These little “rehearsals” can make a big difference in how prepared and empowered they feel.
- Get Them Active and Social Again
After weeks of summer downtime, jumping straight back into a classroom full of people can be overwhelming. Gently reintroduce group activities like playdates, sports, or local classes.
At SESMA Martial Arts in Norwich, we help children aged 3 and up build confidence, resilience, and positive social skills in a safe and friendly environment. Our classes aren’t just about kicks and punches — they’re about helping kids believe in themselves, stand tall, and treat others with respect.
If your child is feeling unsure or lacking confidence about going back to school, a few martial arts classes can be a fantastic way to help them feel strong and ready.
- Know Where to Get Support
Sadly, not every child’s school journey is smooth — and bullying does happen. It’s important to remind children that they can talk to you about anything that’s bothering them, no matter how small.
