Keeping Our Little Ones Safe

Keeping Little Ones Safe at Home: A Parent’s Guide to Everyday Hazards

As parents, we know our homes are filled with love, laughter… and more potential hazards than we’d like to admit! Young children are naturally curious, and their little hands seem magnetically drawn to anything shiny, noisy, or within reach. While we can’t bubble-wrap the world, we can make our homes safer with a few smart changes.

At SESMA Martial Arts, we talk a lot about confidence, awareness, and safety — values that begin right at home. So here’s a handy guide for spotting and reducing everyday risks in your home.

🔌 1. Electric Sockets & Cables

Electricity is fascinating to young minds — but extremely dangerous.

What to do:

  • Cover unused sockets with safety plugs.
  • Keep cords for lamps, TVs, or chargers out of reach or secured to the wall.
  • Never leave dangling wires where children could pull appliances down onto themselves.

🚪 2. Opening the Front Door

Children may not understand who is safe to open the door to — and a well-meaning toddler could put themselves at risk.

What to do:

  • Teach them a clear rule: Only grown-ups open the door.
  • Use safety latches or chain locks to prevent doors from being opened fully.
  • Role-play “knock-knock” scenarios so they know what to do if someone comes while you’re not in the room.

☕ 3. Hot Pans, Kettles & Drinks

Burns can happen in seconds — and they’re among the most common childhood injuries at home.

What to do:

  • Turn pot handles away from the edge of the stove.
  • Keep hot drinks well away from edges of tables or counters.
  • Use a cordless kettle and store it at the back of the worktop when not in use.
  • Never hold a baby or toddler while drinking something hot.

🧼 4. Cleaning Products

Colourful bottles can look like juice to a child — but the contents are anything but safe.

What to do:

  • Store all cleaning products in high cupboards with child-proof locks.
  • Avoid transferring cleaning liquids into unlabelled containers (like old drinks bottles).
  • Consider using natural cleaning alternatives where possible.

💊 5. Medicines & Pills

To a child, pills can look like sweets — and it only takes a second for them to swallow something dangerous.

What to do:

  • Store all medicines, vitamins, and supplements out of sight and reach.
  • Use containers with child-resistant lids — and still lock them away.
  • Never refer to medicine as “candy” or “treats,” even to encourage taking it.

🔪 6. Sharp Edges & Objects

Coffee tables, knives, scissors, and even broken toys can all pose risks.

What to do:

  • Use soft corner protectors on low tables and furniture.
  • Store sharp kitchen tools well out of reach.
  • Supervise arts and crafts sessions and keep scissors or craft blades locked away.

🧸 7. Small Objects & Choking Hazards

Young children explore the world with their mouths — making small items especially risky.

Watch out for:

  • Coins, batteries, buttons, marbles, or toy parts.
  • Hairbands, beads, or dried foods like nuts.
Tip: If it can fit through a toilet roll tube, it’s too small for a toddler.

🪟 8. Windows & Balconies

Open windows might be lovely for fresh air — but can be extremely dangerous if a child climbs up.

What to do:

  • Use window restrictors or locks.
  • Keep furniture away from windows to prevent climbing.
  • Never leave a child alone on a balcony, no matter how safe it may seem.

🧠 9. Think Like a Toddler!

Try a “crawl test”: get on your hands and knees and explore your home from your child’s eye level. You’ll be surprised what looks fun (and risky!) from down there.

❤️ Safety = Confidence

At SESMA Martial Arts, we don’t just teach martial arts — we teach children how to be aware of their surroundings, trust their instincts, and look after themselves. That sense of safety starts at home, and with your support, they’ll build the confidence to stay safe in every environment.
