Car parks might seem fairly harmless, but for young children, they can be full of hidden dangers—especially now that electric cars are becoming more common. Unlike petrol or diesel vehicles, electric cars make very little noise. That means your child may not hear a car approaching, even if it’s just a few feet away.
As parents, it’s our job to stay alert—but it’s also essential to teach our kids some simple safety habits so they can stay safe too.
🧒 Why Car Parks Are Risky for Children
Children are naturally curious, easily distracted, and often hard to spot behind cars. When they’re excited after a shopping trip or running ahead to the car, they’re not thinking about safety. Add in a quiet electric car reversing out of a space, and you’ve got a potentially dangerous situation.
⚡ The Problem with Electric Cars
Electric and hybrid vehicles are so quiet, you often don’t hear them until they’re right behind you—if at all. In busy car parks, where drivers may be looking for spaces, reversing, or distracted by sat navs or phones, children need to be extra cautious.
That’s why it’s so important to talk to your child about car park safety early on.
✅ 6 Car Park Safety Tips to Teach Your Children
- Hold Hands or Stay Close
Always hold your child’s hand in the car park. If their hands are full or they don’t want to hold hands, ask them to keep one hand on your bag, trolley, or the side of the car until you’re safely inside. - Stop, Look, and Listen—Even in a Car Park
Remind them that car parks are like roads: you need to stop, look both ways, and listen before crossing any lanes—even if it’s just to get to your car. - Watch for Reversing Lights
Teach them what reversing lights look like—usually white lights at the back of the car. If they see these lights on, they should stop immediately and wait until the car has moved or stopped. - Walk, Don’t Run
Running makes it harder to stop in time if a car is reversing or pulling out. Encourage walking slowly and keeping eyes up (not on screens or toys!). - Stick to Footpaths and Marked Routes
Many car parks have painted walkways or pedestrian paths. Use them, and explain to your child why it’s safer than walking in the middle of the road. - Park Safety Starts Before You Leave the House
Have a quick chat about safety before leaving for a trip. Keeping the rules fresh in their minds helps children remember them when it matters most.
💬 A Little Awareness Goes a Long Way
Talking to your child about car park safety doesn’t have to be scary—it’s about building habits that keep them safe and confident. You can even make it a game: “Who can spot the reversing lights first?” or “Let’s see who remembers the safety steps when we get to the shops.”
